Sam Bourne – My Story
Knowing what I know now, I wonder at my own common sense – why did I not think that my digestive pain was connected to what I was consuming and the stressful lifestyle choices I was making? Simple really – but all my doctors did not understand how diet could affect digestive health, how it affects nutritional status, immune function, long term health and overall well-being. It’s almost unbelievable that most medical professionals still don’t.
There is very little aknowledgement and understanding of the gut “Microbiome” and how vitally important it is and that what you eat has a direct effect on its (microbiome) health and its ability to digest, absorb and produce vital nutrients. Even now years later and with so much more scientific evidence out there, many doctors still don’t place any importance on the health of the human intestinal bacteria (your gut flora). With the rate of anti-biotics still prescribed, most are extremely disrespectful of it, and the fact that 85% of your immune function resides in the gut. There is some recognition that overuse of antibiotics is creating resistance and the necessity for reducing the use will also support the health of the microbiome.
I help people learn about their bodies and understand their health issues that surround dietary behaviour and encourage a healthier lifestyle, through exercise, reducing stress and positive choices. This approach is now recognised as ‘LifeStyle Medicine’.
It is vital to know as much as you can about the true nature of the foods you are eating. I practice what I preach, I have used nutrition as my tool to ongoing good health in all stages and aspects of my life. Through my pregnancies and post pregnancy, through many times of stress and as I have gone smoothly and painlessly through hormonal changes.
Good nutrition and nutritional supplements are SO important as so many foods don’t have the nutrients in them they are supposed to. I feel passionately about helping guide people through the confusing and contradictory information that is available through the internet and today’s media.
My children have benefited from a very young age from my dietary guidance and now they are in their teens. They have an in depth understanding of healthy eating even though they don’t always follow it, being teenagers, they realise how important and what a gift it is to understand their own nutritional needs. I passionately believe that children MUST be taught in early years how to eat healthily and why.
As well as being a Nutritional Therapist, I created the
NutriKids characters to help parents and teachers encourage children to learn and appreciate healthy foods.
